7 October 2024
Dr. Zaw Myint Maung, the Deputy Chairman (2) of the National League for Democracy (NLD) and the Chief Minister of Mandalay Region (1951-2024), passed away at 3:00 AM on October 7, 2024, at Mandalay General Hospital due to leukemia. In light of this, the NLD, along with other democratic forces and the National Unity Government (NUG), express their deep condolences to the bereaved family.
Dr. Zaw Myint Maung, from the time he helped establish the NLD until his passing, was unwaveringly committed to the democratic cause, fighting alongside the people and other democratic forces to dismantle military dictatorship. He was repeatedly imprisoned by successive military regimes. During the 2021 military coup, he was unjustly sentenced to 29 years in prison on various charges. Despite suffering from cancer, he was denied adequate healthcare during unjust detainment, where he eventually passed away, becoming a martyr of the nation.
Throughout the NLD’s difficult journey toward democracy, Dr. Zaw Myint Maung stood firm with the people, working tirelessly to foster unity within the party, outside the party, and among democratic forces. He was not only a four-time elected people’s representative, starting from the 1990 elections, but also worked closely with NLD Chairperson Daw Aung San Suu Kyi on election campaigns and grassroots movements, often risking his life.
As Chief Minister of Mandalay Region during the NLD’s first term in government (2016-2021), he performed his duties with dedication, upholding democratic values and serving the public tirelessly for the social and economic development of the people of Mandalay Region and Mandalay City.
Although Dr. Zaw Myint Maung, a highly respected and exemplary leader, has passed away, the National Unity Government reaffirms its commitment to fulfilling the goals of the people’s Spring Revolution, as envisioned by him, and will continue to work steadfastly until its success.
His love for the country and the people, his loyalty to the NLD and the public, his integrity, and his sacrifices for democracy will forever remain in the hearts of all Myanmar people as a model and legacy of an outstanding politician. The National Unity Government will always remember and honor him with deep respect.
May Dr. Zaw Myint Maung rest in peace.
