A powerful earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale struck near Sagaing, Myanmar, at approximately 12:50 PM today. The epicenter was located 16 kilometers northwest of Sagaing, at a depth of 10 kilometers. This major earthquake, classified as a strike-slip event, was felt across a wide region, including Bangladesh, India, Laos, Thailand, Myanmar, and China. Approximately 12 minutes after the initial quake, a significant aftershock with a magnitude of 6.4 occurred, centered about 18 kilometers south of Sagaing, near the Innwa Bridge airport area.
The earthquakes have caused extensive damage across the Sagaing, Mandalay Regions, and surrounding towns. Numerous buildings, including heritage sites, religious structures, and community infrastructure, have collapsed. Landslides have occurred, and vital roads and bridges have been severely impacted. In response to this crisis, the National Unity Government (NUG) convened an emergency meeting within hours of the quake, directing relevant ministries to initiate immediate relief efforts. Authorities are currently compiling reports on casualties and damage while conducting search and rescue operations, relocation efforts, and reconstruction activities. We urge local civil society organizations and the public to come together to support one another during this challenging time.
We express deep sorrow for the loss and suffering of the people and their families affected by the earthquake and pledge to stand with the public throughout the recovery and rebuilding process. Reports indicate that in Thailand, the earthquake caused a partially constructed building to collapse, resulting in the deaths of several construction workers, including Myanmar migrant workers, which has caused additional grief. The damage to religious structures is also a loss to the nation’s heritage, making it especially heartbreaking. We urge the international community and organizations to provide humanitarian aid and support to the affected people in Myanmar. We call for effective coordination to ensure that aid reaches those genuinely in need.
Due to structural cracks, ground fractures, and the possibility of further aftershocks, there is a heightened risk of additional building collapses, dam failures, and bridge destruction. Civilians are advised to remain vigilant and conduct thorough inspections of buildings. Finally, everyone is urged to familiarize themselves with earthquake safety measures and take necessary precautions to minimize casualties and damages in case of further tremors.
