1. The National Unity Government (NUG) warmly welcomes the humanitarian visit conducted by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the State Counsellor of Myanmar, on 3 August 2026. This meeting has confirmed that the national leader—who has been denied contact with the outside world and arbitrarily detained for many years—is still alive. It has brought a measure of relief, comfort, and encouragement to the people of Myanmar, who have long been deeply concerned about her well-being.
2. This humanitarian access was not the result of any goodwill on the part of the military. Rather, it was achieved through sustained international pressure, together with the persistent advocacy and unwavering demands of the people of Myanmar and democracy supporters around the world. While this meeting represents a positive humanitarian development, it does not diminish the grave concerns that remain regarding Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s health, the conditions of her detention, and the continued violation of her fundamental rights.
3. The National Unity Government firmly reiterates that this one-off humanitarian visit can in no way substitute for the immediate and unconditional release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners. Furthermore, this meeting must not be exploited to confer legitimacy upon the military junta, to conceal its serious violations of international law, or to distract from or replace the urgent need for a genuine political solution to Myanmar’s ongoing crisis.
4. The National Unity Government expresses its sincere appreciation to the United Nations, the European Union, ASEAN, the international community, neighbouring countries, and all those who have consistently called for humanitarian access and the release of political prisoners.
5. The National Unity Government reaffirms its unwavering commitment to working together with allied revolutionary forces and the international community until the people’s revolution succeeds, with the objectives of securing the unconditional release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners, completely dismantling military dictatorship, ensuring justice, and establishing the genuine federal democratic union that the people of Myanmar have long aspired to achieve.
